Journaling Tips

Working With Journaling Prompts

All you need to get started is a notebook and a pen and if you’re new to journaling I encourage you to start here.

  • Don’t worry about spelling, punctuation, grammar or even the neatness of your handwriting.
  • If you are unsure how to respond to a prompt, try writing: “I’m not sure how to respond to this prompt but the thoughts that immediately come to mind/are currently on my mind are…”
  • If you are writing with music or a timer and you finish before the music or timer end, you can go back to the prompt and ask yourself: “And, what else?”. Or you can simply read over what you’ve written and highlight/ circle/underline anything that stands out or that you might want to come back to.
  • Just keep the pen moving and let your authentic voice guide you.

Some days journaling will be enjoyable, other days it may be deeply uncomfortable. Be gentle with yourself, especially if painful, traumatic or uncomfortable feelings, memories or emotions begin to surface.
